2011 School

On Saturday June 4th 2011, 140 people attended the inaugural  Countess Markievicz School in Dublin. The keynote address was given by Ms. Arni Hole, who flew over from Norway for the event. Arni gave a well received presentation on the Norwegian experience of gender quotas, commenting afterwards to Lucy our Chairperson, that Ireland is where Norway was 35 years ago!

Dr. Sonja Tiernan  University of Notre Dame

Sonja is a research fellow at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies in the University of Notre Dame. She was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and is on the Women’s History Association of Irelandexecutive committee. Sonja’s most recent book, An Image of Such Politics: The Life and Work of Eva Gore-Booth will be published by Manchester University Press later this year.

Dr. Mary McAuliffe, UCD

Mary lectures on Irish Women’s History and Feminist History in the Women’s Studies Dept. in UCD. She is on the Advisory Committee for Justice for Magdalenes. Her published works include Senator Kathleen Browne 1876-1943 and she has recently co-edited the book Palgrave Advances in Irish History. Mary has been secretary of theWomen’s History Association of Ireland (whai.ie) since 2007.

Women and Politics

Professor Kathleen Lynch, Equality Studies, UCD

Kathleen Lynch is Professor of Equality Studies in University College Dublin, where she holds a Senior Lectureship in Education. She took part in the Gender Excellence Programme (GEXcel) at the Universities of Linskoping and Orebro, Sweden in 2010 and was appointed to the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences(IRCHSS). She is the co-author of several books, including Equality: From Theory to Action and Affective Equality, Love, Care & Injustice.  Kathleen is a passionate community activist.

Ailbhe Smyth, Feminist Open Forum

Ailbhe is co-convenor of the Feminist Open Forum and chair of the National Lesbian & Gay Federation. She has been involved in LGBT and radical politics for many years. Formerly a Senior Lecturer in Women’s Studies and also a Director of the Women’s Education, Resource and Research Centre (WERRC) in UCD, she has published widely on feminist theory, politics & LGBT issues. Ailbhe is currently working in education and consultancy in  the community and NGO sectors.

Joan Collins, TD, Dublin South Central

Joan is a TD for Dublin South Central.  Before entering politics, she worked as a clerk with An Post and was involved with the Communication Worker’s Union. She was elected as a local councillor for the first time in 2004 and re-elected in 2009. Joan was recently elected for the first time as a TD for People Before Profit/United Left Alliance.

Margaret E. Ward, Financial Journalist & broadcaster

Margaret is an award winning financial journalist. She spent 15 years as a print journalist(Irish Times business columnist and personal finance editor The Sunday Times) and is a regular contributor to RTE, TV3 and BBC. In 2005, she founded Clear Ink a corporate communications company. She recently presented Breakfast Business on Newstalk. Margaret created Journalist.ie, a list of potential female media contributors and was involved in establishing the ‘Women on Air‘ project.

Helen McCormack, Journalist & radio producer

Helen has written for the Irish Examiner and regularly contributes to The Evening Herald. She started her radio career at Newstalk and works as a radio producer on  Anything Goes the Saturday morning talk show on 4fm. Helen was also a founding member of  ’Women on Air’, a project dedicated to increasing the participation of women in the media.

Gender Quotas, Norway & Ireland

Mary Lou McDonald, TD. Dublin Central

Mary Lou is a T.D. for Dublin Central and Deputy leader of the  Sinn Féin party. She is party spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform. She was M.E.P for Dublin from 2004-2009 and during her time in the European Parliament she was a prominent member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and the Civil Liberties Committee. Mary Lou was educated in Trinity College, the University of Limerick and D.C.U, where she studied English Literature, European Integration and Human Resource Management.

Siobhán O'Donoghue, Director, Migrant Rights Centre of Ireland

Siobhán is director of the Migrant Rights Centre of Ireland. She was a member of theNational Economic and Social Forum from 1999-2003 and acted as negotiator for theCommunity Platform in the late 1990s. She  is chairperson of the Community Workers’ Co-op and a board member of the National Women’s Council of Ireland and author of Private Homes – Public Concerns, a report detailing the lives of  migrant women in private homes. Siobhán is a community activist and one of the founding members ofClaiming Our Future, the civic society forum.

Dr. Elaine Byrne, Trinity College Dublin

Elaine is an adjutant lecturer in the Dept. of Political Science in TCD, where she teaches Comparative Political Reform. She has regularly written for the Irish Times, Sunday Business Post, Sunday Times and The Guardian. She is an academic member of We The Citizens, a new civic society movement. Elaine’s  forthcoming book A Crooked Harp: Political Corruption in Ireland 1922 – 2010 will be published this year.

Arni Hole, Director General , Ministry for Children, Equality & Social Inclusion, Norway

Arni is a philosopher by training with qualifications in economics & psychology. She is Director General in the Royal Ministry of Children, Equality & Social Inclusion, Norway. She heads the Dept. of Family & Equality is in charge of family policies/economic provisions for families & children, parental leave regulations, measures against family violence, marriage laws, equality & anti-discrimination on the basis of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion & age.

Her responsibilites include international co-operation with the UN, EU/EEA, Council of Europe and Nordic Council of Ministers. Arni is widely engaged in international affairs and is much requested as a speaker in national & international fora especially on family and work & gender equality issues.
